First Half: Munie Breaks the Deadlock
The opening half was physical, with San Jose picking up three yellow cards during the first 19 minutes.
The Earthquakes came close to opening the scoring in the 32nd minute when Ousseni Bouda struck the post from inside the box.
Six minutes later, San Jose finally found the breakthrough.
In the 38th minute, Niko Tsakiris delivered a corner kick into the box. Beau Leroux collected the ball and worked toward the left side before sending a low pass across the area. Daniel Munie reacted quickly, redirecting the ball past Houston goalkeeper Jonathan Bond for a 1-0 lead.
It was Munie's fifth MLS goal of the season and his seventh career MLS goal.

Second Half: Houston Turns Up the Pressure
Houston came out with more attacking pressure after halftime and controlled much of the possession.
The Dynamo finished the match with 60.3 percent possession and outshot San Jose 11-10. Houston also registered five shots on target, compared with just one for the Earthquakes.
Despite spending more time with the ball, Houston struggled to find a way through San Jose's defense.
The Earthquakes' back line of Munie, Dave Romney and Jack Jasinski helped limit Houston's opportunities, while goalkeeper Angus Gunn remained alert behind them.

Gunn's Late Heroics
The biggest moment of the match came late in the second half.
In the 86th minute, Houston created two dangerous chances in quick succession. Nick Markanich headed the ball toward goal before Héctor Herrera followed up with another attempt.
Gunn made two crucial saves, including a kick save on Herrera's effort, keeping the Dynamo off the scoreboard.
Those saves allowed San Jose to protect its one-goal advantage through the final minutes.

Defense Holds Firm
Although Houston had the majority of possession, San Jose's defensive organization prevented the Dynamo from finding an equalizer.
The Earthquakes recorded their second consecutive clean sheet against Houston. Gunn also earned his second MLS shutout, with both clean sheets coming against the Dynamo.
San Jose had previously played Houston to a 0-0 draw on August 29.

What the Win Means
The victory was San Jose's second straight after the club ended an eight-match winless streak with a 3-2 victory over San Diego earlier in the week.
The result also continued San Jose's recent success against Houston, with the Earthquakes now unbeaten in their last four regular-season meetings against the Dynamo.
For Houston, the loss ended a three-match unbeaten streak. Despite the defeat, the Dynamo remained second in the Western Conference with 43 points.

Final Takeaway
San Jose did not need a high-scoring performance to claim all three points. Munie's first-half finish gave the Earthquakes the lead, and their defense and Gunn's late saves made sure Houston could not find the equalizer.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-0 San Jose victory — another clean sheet against Houston and another important result as the MLS regular season enters its final stretch.
