Competitive Start to the Series

Los Angeles FC opened their CONCACAF Champions Cup Round of 16 series with a hard-fought match against Costa Rican side Liga Deportiva Alajuelense on Tuesday night. Playing at BMO Stadium, LAFC looked to take advantage of their home crowd in the first leg of the matchup.

From the opening whistle, the Black & Gold controlled possession and tried to dictate the pace of the game. LAFC pushed forward through the wings and midfield, creating a handful of early chances while Alajuelense remained compact defensively and looked to counterattack.

Visitors Take the Lead Before Halftime

Despite LAFC’s pressure during much of the first half, it was the visitors who struck first. Just before halftime, Alajuelense found space outside the box and capitalized on one of their limited opportunities.

Midfielder Alejandro Bran delivered a powerful strike that beat LAFC goalkeeper Hugo Lloris, giving the Costa Rican side a surprising 1–0 lead heading into the break. The goal shifted momentum and forced LAFC to regroup after dominating most of the half.

Bouanga Responds for LAFC

LAFC came out of halftime determined to find an equalizer, increasing their attacking intensity. Their persistence paid off midway through the second half when star forward Denis Bouanga stepped up once again for the Black & Gold.

Bouanga finished off a well-worked attacking sequence, calmly placing his shot past the goalkeeper to bring LAFC level at 1–1. The goal energized the stadium and gave LAFC renewed belief as they continued to push for a second goal.

LAFC Push for the Winner

After equalizing, LAFC continued to control the match and spent long stretches in the attacking half. Several chances were created through quick passing combinations and crosses into the box, but Alajuelense’s defense held firm.

The visitors also relied on key saves from their goalkeeper and disciplined defending to keep the match level as the clock wound down. Despite LAFC’s late pressure, the breakthrough goal never came.
