Xolos Take Advantage Early at PayPal Park
The San Jose Earthquakes returned to action Friday night after the MLS schedule paused for the FIFA World Cup, hosting Liga MX side Club Tijuana in an international friendly at PayPal Park. Despite an encouraging response after conceding early, the Earthquakes were unable to overcome the visitors, falling 2-1 in front of an energetic crowd eager to see club soccer return.
The match served as an opportunity for Bruce Arena's squad to regain match fitness ahead of the second half of the MLS season while testing themselves against one of Mexico's most recognizable clubs.

Tijuana Strike First, Leroux Responds
Club Tijuana came out with intensity and needed just six minutes to open the scoring. A well-delivered corner from Ignacio Rivero found Adonis Preciado, who powered a header into the back of the net to hand the Liga MX side an early 1-0 advantage.
San Jose answered with positive attacking play. Timo Werner nearly helped produce an equalizer in the 10th minute when his dangerous cross found Jamar Ricketts inside the box, but the chance drifted just wide.
The pressure eventually paid off in the 16th minute. Preston Judd forced a turnover high up the field before slipping a pass to Beau Leroux, who stayed composed and slotted his finish past goalkeeper Salím Hernández to level the match at 1-1. The goal rewarded the Earthquakes for their aggressive pressing and brought the home crowd back into the game.

Missed Chances Prove Costly
Following the equalizer, San Jose looked capable of taking the lead. Daniel Munie came inches away from putting the Quakes ahead midway through the first half after Hernández ventured off his line, but Tijuana recovered just in time to clear the danger.
Club Tijuana responded by regaining control of possession and eventually found what proved to be the match-winning goal before halftime, capitalizing on another defensive lapse to restore their advantage at 2-1.
The second half featured several substitutions as both managers rotated their squads, but the intensity remained high. San Jose pushed forward in search of another equalizer, creating moments of pressure in the attacking third, yet the final touch continued to elude the hosts as Tijuana's defense stood firm.

Valuable Minutes Before MLS Returns
While the result won't count toward the standings, the friendly provided meaningful minutes for players returning from the World Cup break and gave Bruce Arena another opportunity to evaluate his squad ahead of the restart of league play.
Beau Leroux's goal and San Jose's aggressive pressing were bright spots throughout the evening, while Timo Werner consistently looked dangerous down the left flank. However, defensive mistakes and missed opportunities ultimately proved costly as the Earthquakes dropped a competitive 2-1 decision to Club Tijuana.
San Jose will now shift its focus back to MLS competition, looking to build on the positives from Friday night's performance while tightening up defensively for the remainder of the season.
