A Tight Southern California Battle

LAFC and San Diego FC met Saturday night at BMO Stadium in a match that stayed scoreless for nearly the entire 90 minutes. LAFC entered the game in strong form, but San Diego stayed organized defensively and made it difficult for the home side to find a breakthrough.

The match ultimately came down to one late mistake. San Diego earned a penalty near the end of regulation, and Anders Dreyer converted from the spot to give the visitors a 1-0 victory. The result ended LAFC's eight-game unbeaten run across all competitions.

LAFC Has Chances, But Can't Finish

LAFC had opportunities throughout the night, including a first-half goal by Denis Bouanga that was later overturned following a VAR review.

Son Heung-min and the rest of LAFC's attack also struggled to turn their chances into goals. Despite putting pressure on San Diego's defense, LAFC couldn't find the final touch needed to take control of the match.

San Diego goalkeeper CJ dos Santos played an important role, making three saves and keeping LAFC off the scoreboard. His performance helped the visitors remain in the game long enough to find their own opportunity late.

San Diego Stays Patient

San Diego didn't need to dominate the scoreboard to remain dangerous. The visitors stayed compact, moved the ball effectively and waited for their chances.

The Chrome and Azul finished with about 60% possession and completed 527 accurate passes, compared with 325 for LAFC. San Diego also recorded seven corner kicks and forced LAFC's defense to remain alert throughout the night.

That patience eventually paid off in the final minutes.

The Turning Point

The decisive moment came in the 88th minute.

During a San Diego attack, a ball played into the LAFC penalty area struck defender Ryan Porteous. After video review, the referee determined that Porteous had committed a handball and awarded San Diego a penalty.

Dreyer took responsibility from the spot. He calmly sent his shot into the net in the 89th minute, putting San Diego ahead 1-0.

It was Dreyer's eighth goal of the season and his 27th in 53 career appearances.

A Strange Ending for Dreyer

Dreyer's night ended with a twist.

After scoring the winning penalty, the San Diego forward was shown a second yellow card in stoppage time and was sent off. That means he will miss San Diego's next match because of suspension.

Even without their goal scorer on the field, San Diego managed to protect the lead and complete the shutout.

San Diego Continues to Give LAFC Problems

The victory continued San Diego's impressive record against LAFC.

San Diego is now unbeaten in all four MLS meetings between the clubs, with three victories and one draw. The club also won at BMO Stadium for the second consecutive season.

That history makes Saturday's result more than just another three points. San Diego has quickly developed into a difficult matchup for LAFC, particularly in these Southern California rivalry games.

What the Result Means for LAFC

For LAFC, the loss was a frustrating one. The Black & Gold dropped to third place in the Western Conference with 34 points, while San Diego moved to 24 points.

The biggest concern for LAFC was its inability to capitalize on its chances. The team had stretches of pressure but couldn't produce the goal needed to change the game.

After putting together an eight-match unbeaten run, LAFC now has to regroup quickly and focus on its next stretch of MLS matches.

What the Result Means for San Diego

For San Diego FC, this was a major road victory.

The team showed that it can defend under pressure, stay patient and take advantage of a mistake when the opportunity arrives. Dos Santos kept the goal intact, while Dreyer provided the decisive moment.

The victory also gives San Diego valuable momentum as it pushes toward the MLS playoffs.

Final Thoughts

Saturday's match was decided by inches and one late mistake.

LAFC controlled portions of the game and created opportunities, but San Diego's defensive discipline kept the score level. When the decisive moment arrived, Dreyer made no mistake from the penalty spot.

San Diego left Los Angeles with all three points, while LAFC was left to wonder what might have happened if it had been more clinical in front of goal.

For a match that produced only one goal, the rivalry delivered plenty of drama — and once again, San Diego FC came out on top.

Final Score: LAFC 0-1 San Diego FC
