El Tri Earns Another Important Victory

Mexico continued building momentum ahead of the 2026 FIFA World Cup with a 1-0 victory over Australia on Saturday night at the Rose Bowl in Pasadena, California. After defeating Ghana earlier in the week, El Tri secured another positive result as head coach Javier Aguirre continues evaluating his squad before announcing the final World Cup roster.

In front of nearly 79,000 fans, Mexico delivered a disciplined performance and showed plenty of organization on both sides of the ball to earn the win.

Johan Vásquez Provides the Difference

The game's lone goal came in the 28th minute when defender Johan Vásquez connected with a perfectly delivered corner kick from Alexis Vega. Vásquez rose above the Australian defense and headed the ball into the back of the net, giving Mexico an early advantage.

The goal rewarded Mexico for its strong start and ultimately proved enough to secure the victory.

Mexico Controls the Opening Half

Mexico looked comfortable throughout much of the first half, controlling possession and creating the better scoring opportunities. Aguirre made several changes to the lineup compared to the team that defeated Ghana, but the squad continued to play with confidence and intensity.

The midfield dictated the pace of the game while the defense limited Australia's chances, allowing El Tri to take a deserved lead into halftime.

Australia Responds in the Second Half

Australia came out with more urgency after the break and began applying pressure as they searched for an equalizer. The Socceroos created a few dangerous moments and forced Mexico's defense to stay alert throughout the second half.

Despite the increased pressure, Mexico remained organized defensively and did not allow Australia to find the breakthrough goal. Goalkeeper Raúl Rangel and the back line stood firm to preserve the clean sheet.

Standout Performances

Johan Vásquez was one of the top performers of the night after scoring the winning goal and helping anchor the defense. Alexis Vega also made an impact with the assist from the corner kick that led to the match winner.

Several players used the opportunity to strengthen their case for a place on Mexico's final 26-man World Cup roster as competition for spots continues to increase.

Looking Ahead

Mexico has now won back-to-back preparation matches against Ghana and Australia, giving the team confidence heading into the final stages of World Cup preparation. Aguirre is expected to announce the final 26-player squad on June 1 as Mexico continues getting ready for the biggest tournament in world football.

With another victory secured and another clean sheet recorded, El Tri continues moving in the right direction as the countdown to the 2026 FIFA World Cup draws closer.
