A Strong Night in Los Angeles

Los Angeles Football Club returned to BMO Stadium on Wednesday, October 14, looking to get back on track after a difficult stretch of results. Facing Austin FC in a crucial late-season MLS matchup, LAFC delivered an important 3-1 victory in front of the home crowd, with Denis Bouanga and Son Heung-Min leading the way.

The Black & Gold entered the match sitting sixth in the Western Conference, with the regular season nearing its conclusion and playoff positioning still at stake. Under interim head coach Xavi Tamarit, LAFC needed a strong performance to regain momentum, and the team responded with an aggressive attacking display.

Although the opening half finished without a goal, LAFC created the more dangerous opportunities and consistently put pressure on Austin's defense. The hosts finished the first 45 minutes with a significant advantage in shots, but Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver kept his team in the game with several important saves.

That pressure eventually paid off after halftime, when LAFC found the breakthrough and took control of the match.

Bouanga Opens the Scoring

LAFC's breakthrough arrived in the 52nd minute, thanks to the connection between Son and Bouanga. After Mark Delgado helped move the ball forward, Son found space behind Austin's defense and worked his way into the penalty area before delivering a pass to Bouanga, who finished from close range to give LAFC a 1-0 lead.

The goal gave the home side the advantage it had been searching for throughout the first half. Bouanga's movement and ability to find space in dangerous areas once again proved valuable, while Son's vision and creativity helped unlock Austin's defensive line.

For LAFC, the opening goal was an important step toward turning its attacking dominance into a result.

Austin Responds, But LAFC Strikes Back

Austin FC refused to go away quietly. In the 66th minute, Myrto Uzuni intercepted possession and quickly played the ball forward to Brandon Vázquez. The forward finished with a low strike past goalkeeper Hugo Lloris to level the score at 1-1.

However, Austin's celebration did not last long.

Just one minute later, LAFC regained the lead through Bouanga, who scored his second goal of the night. An attempted clearance from Austin goalkeeper Brad Stuver struck Son inside the penalty area, and the deflection fell directly into Bouanga's path. The Gabonese forward reacted quickly, took a touch, and fired a right-footed shot past Stuver at the near post.

The quick response shifted the momentum back toward LAFC and demonstrated the team's ability to capitalize on opportunities when the game was on the line.

Son Heung-Min Seals the Victory

LAFC continued to push forward after retaking the lead, and its attacking partnership delivered once again in the 72nd minute.

Bouanga won a header near midfield and directed the ball toward Jacob Shaffelburg on the left wing. Shaffelburg then sent a curling cross into the penalty area, where Son arrived to finish with a first-time shot and make it 3-1.

The goal capped off an outstanding performance from Son, who finished the night with one goal and two assists. His ability to create opportunities for teammates while remaining a scoring threat made him one of the biggest difference-makers on the field.

Bouanga also finished with an impressive two-goal performance, continuing to lead LAFC's attack as the club pushes toward the postseason.

LAFC Dominates the Numbers

The final score reflected a match in which LAFC consistently threatened in the attacking third. The Black & Gold finished with 28 shots compared to Austin's 13, while also recording 13 shots on target against Austin's four.

Stuver was called into action repeatedly, making 10 saves to keep Austin within reach for much of the night. LAFC also registered an expected goals total of 4.5, highlighting the quality and quantity of its scoring opportunities.

Despite Austin having more possession, LAFC proved more dangerous in front of goal. The home side's ability to turn sustained pressure into three second-half goals ultimately made the difference.

An Important Step Toward the Playoffs

The victory was significant beyond the three goals scored. LAFC entered the night needing points to improve its position in the Western Conference standings, and the win moved the club to 45 points with a 12-9-9 record.

It also marked the first victory for interim head coach Xavi Tamarit, who was looking to help the team regain confidence during a crucial stretch of the season. With the playoffs approaching, performances like this could prove important as LAFC looks to build momentum and secure a stronger postseason position.

For Austin FC, the defeat was a frustrating result after briefly equalizing in the second half. The visitors showed they could threaten LAFC, but the quick response from Bouanga and the finishing quality of Son ultimately proved too much to overcome.
